Celebrity and fashion collide in one of the most needed collabs.
There have been many exciting celebrity and high-street brand collaborations; this year alone we’ve seen Alexa Chung X M&S, Victoria Beckham X Target and of course, Paris Hilton X Missguided. But the most exciting collaboration of 2018 has just dropped.
As of today, Pretty Little Thing released collab with supermodel and body positivity activist, Ashley Graham. “In sizes 6 – 28, this collection caters to all women, from the petite babes to our plus size honeys, and everybody in-between”.
If you don’t already know who AG is, don’t worry girl – we’ve got your back!
Scouted in a shopping mall when she was 12 years old, she started appearing in ads and catalogues. Turning 18, she moved to New York City to pursue her modelling career. As a size 14, weighing 200 lbs and standing at nearly 6 foot tall, she is categorised as a ‘plus-size model’. However, her attitude towards labelling is something that has empowered women all over the world. Having openly admitted she has struggled with body positivity over the years and had her body image discriminated against, AG has become a true ambassador for women everywhere who sometimes struggle with self-acceptance. In April 2018, Graham made a moving TED Talk speech about the power of self-acceptance and the problem with the term “plus-sized.” In her speech, she describes how the term “plus-sized model” made her feel like she was an outsider in the fashion world, even though she had a successful modelling career.
“I was known as the ‘Fat Model’. The girl who is pretty for a big girl.”
Graham faced discrimination against her body type and size almost every day whilst working as a model. Yet instead of letting the negativity from others drag her down, she became a major body-positivity activist, showing men and women all over the world, you can be happy, confident and beautiful no matter what size you are. Her big break was back in 2016 when she became the first curvy model to grace the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. She now has a whopping 7.4 million followers on Instagram and she has appeared on the covers of influential fashion magazines, such as Vogue, Elle, Cosmopolitan, Glamour and Harper’s Bazaar. In 2018, she walked for Michael Kors and Dolce and Gabbana in their New York Fashion Week collections – and now she is the focus of Pretty Little Thing’s latest collaboration.
With an aim to keep empowering those who aren’t afraid to own the skin they’re in, the collection includes a wide range of sizes, from 6 to 28, catering for all bodies, no matter the size. This is next level occasion wear for women who are fearless in style as well as spirit.
“Luxury dressing through pieces in indulgent satin, gilded metallics, and provocative lace. Dramatic silhouettes emphasise the female form, while lavish prints bring a whole new level of opulence.”
You can find the most flattering cuts and iconic Pretty Little Thing pieces, from cowl neck bodysuits and snakeskin tie waist jumpsuits to leopard print mesh skirts and glitter binding dresses. They’re prices that certainly won’t break the bank, (most expensive item at £70 but most average around £25), the AW18 party/occasion wardrobe is set to be a rule-breaking, stylish and body empowered season.
In the words of Ashley Graham:
“Be you. Be real. Be authentic. Be your favourite kind of woman. Don’t let anybody else take that job. And remember this is the generation of body diversity. The current is changing.”
